Hey, You Booted Me in the Head! Ike had soccer class today. I took the girls to the playground area of the park while Ike had his class. Afterward, Ike came and joined us. I was standing there, minding my own business, when suddenly I was Booted in the Head! By Elli. From 8 feet away.
Technically, I was hit in the head with her flying shoe after she kicked it off. But I stand by my statement. | | Friday, September 5th, 2008 | | 9:08 am |
More Commercial Horror I caught one of the Seinfeld Microsoft commercials last night. Seinfeld encounters Bill Gates in a shoe store at the mall and stuff follows. It ends with them walking off together while Gates twitches his butt. This I did not need to see. I now live in horror at the prospect of some future crossover commercial with Bill Gates shaking his ass and Martha Stewart checking it out. You can thank aelfie for this: Rule 34. Enjoy your day! | | Thursday, September 4th, 2008 | | 10:15 am |
Emmy Noether: Cooler Than You'll Ever Be Today's featured Wikipedia article is Emmy Noether. She was a big-time mathematician back in the early 1900's. She worked with many of the people who developed Quantum Mechanics and made significant contributions to it and other mathematical research. Noether's Theorem is one of the central underpinnings of all modern physics. I heard this theorem invoked in every class for 5 years back when I was studying physics. One day, I was poking around in my Classical Mechanics text for some reason I don't recall. I didn't use it often since my focus was on QM. I came across the section on Noether's Theorem and found a footnote that I'd overlooked when first using the text 5 years earlier: "Noether's Theorem was created by Emmy Noether, one of the greatest women in all of mathematics and physics." And my immediate thought was, "Wait, Noether was a woman?" Thus was I smacked in the face with both my own gender preconceptions and the strength of the bias still existing in the academic community. First I was angry: "Why didn't any of my profs ever mention her first name?" Then I realized: "Why did I just assume that an unattached last name in math and science must be male?" (Later, I learned about prototyping in my Cognitive Science class -- the assumption is made because it's usually true. The problem with prototyping is that sometimes you will be wrong.) So I still blame the profs. None of them could have been unaware of this fact, but they didn't mention it. I'm certain it could be done with somewhat more grace than, "Hey, this Noether person? She's a chick. Thought you should know." Though with some of my profs, that's probably how it would have come out. Not the best strategy at Berkeley. Anyway, everyone knows about Marie Curie, 'cuz she has two Nobel Prizes. (In your face! Unless your name is Bardeen, Pauling, or Sanger.) Noether was a mathematician before the days of the Fields Medal, so she doesn't have that popular awareness. She still rules, so you should know about her. | | Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008 | | 3:36 pm |
Not News to Me Tell me something I didn't know. This will continue to be amusing to me right up until the point where it hits land and wipes out a million people. Then my house will have all the fun that Katrina and the Waves did three years ago. | | Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008 | | 2:23 pm |

This Comes 20-30 Years Earlier Than Expected I certainly hoped that I would see some variant of the headline Ike Devastates Southeastern U.S. during my life, but the impending reality involves less mad science than I anticipated. Unless you're a fan of pastel teddy bears, of course. | | Thursday, August 28th, 2008 | | 10:08 am |
Return of the Censoring Pinhead! The Great Maine Smut Crusader ( previously mentioned last year) has had her day in court. I was really hoping that the judge would order a strip search once she admitted she had the book with her in the courtroom. *sigh* Apparently judges in Maine are no fun at all. I do hope she gets to spend some quality time in the local pokey after the time limit runs out tomorrow. | | Sunday, August 24th, 2008 | | 9:18 pm |
Mr. Gruberman Goes to Beijing People talking in movie shows, People smoking in bed! People voting Republican, Give them a boot to the head!
(Refrain) Boot to the Head! Nah, nah... [etc]
Mechanics who can't fix a car, Politicians who can't think! The salesman who won't leave me alone, The waiter who forgot my drink!
(Refrain)To this proud tradition, we now add: The ref who tossed me out of the Olympics!"Hey, I don't want no Boot to the Head!"I've been looking for the perfect icon to capture this emotion. I think this really encapsulates the true spirit of BTTH. [And in case anyone is confused on this point, the kicker in the picture is an idiot thug who deserves to have a Jumbo Barrel o' Whoop-Ass dropped on him. Which, it seems, is happening metaphorically.] | | Saturday, August 23rd, 2008 | | 11:45 pm |
Whether You Can Hear It Or Not... The Universe Is Laughing Behind Your Back. Thursday morning, I was awakened by aelfie coming in to where I lay in Ike's bed (my own got too full of kids, as usual) and blithering at me, "There are two lines!" My instinct was to respond "There are four lights!" After some effort, I woke up enough to understand what she was going on about. Thus, she scheduled a blood test for the afternoon, and we got the results back from Kaiser in email the next morning: Positive. Standard result: Negative. Well then, that settles it. Jen's pregnant. All that stuff about needing infertility treatments or else her body will not perform the requisite steps? Turns out that now her several other medical issues are addressed, she does just fine. To our mutual surprise. So, here I am, newly 40 years old today, and I'm going to reset the child-raising clock back to zero. Just when we were getting to the point where we can occasionally do things without the kids. Totally worth it. She promised me three pregnancies or five children, whichever came first. She is a woman of her word. IGtBtJ TM Current Mood: gobsmacked | | 4:36 pm |
The Old Geezebag Time to find The Orb of Studosity. My forty-five day grace period has elapsed; I'm old. To also follow along with ross_teneyck's excursion into the reckonings of my natal day, let's see what's happened today though history, courtesy of Wikipedia: Oooo-kay. And now for some people born on the same day: That'll do, pig. That'll do. | | Thursday, August 14th, 2008 | | 3:07 pm |
To Think That I Saw It on NBC Street! I had reconciled myself to another Olympics with no fencing coverage. At least in this modern age I can watch whatever I have time for online. So far, that's been the Men's Individual Epee Finals. (Which were quite exciting to watch, even though they were a pack of pipe-cleaner shaped Europeans.) This afternoon, aelfie and I took the kids out for pizza. The big screen TV was tuned to the Olympics, of course. I glanced over at one point and was struck dumb. There, on NBC itself, was fencing. I've now lived to see the most unlikely thing that I can imagine. 1I wondered for a bit how this could have happened until I saw the title text indicate that this was the Women's Sabre Team event. Ah, well, that explains it then. The Women's Sabre Individual medals were swept entirely by US fencers. Thus, the team competition is as close to a guaranteed US gold as you get. Whatever, as long as I see swords clashing on my TV. That means other people will see it, and there may be an infinitesimal bump in interest. 1This position is now replaced by a tie between 1) holding the current U.S. administration responsible for its actions and 2) The China Syndrome 2 featuring Dr. Christmas Jones. Where the Hell Is My Flying Motorcycle? I read the obituary page while sitting in the gym lobby this morning. (I know, I'm old. Got it.) Today's minor-league famous person was George Furth. It listed all of these theatrical things he did, and had a picture of him next to Steven Sondheim. (Huh, so that's what Sondheim looks like. Sort of a cross between Richard Branson and Richard Chaimberlain.) I knew I'd seen him in something, because I immediately recognized his face. The obit mentioned that he was a character actor and listed some better known roles. None of them matched my impression of him though. Weird. On the drive home, it hit me. He was The Egg in Megaforce. Mr. Furth, You So Totally Rock! [ObKane: Henry Silva, for all your Silva needs!] | | Sunday, August 10th, 2008 | | 8:43 am |

CNN: Kicking a Guy When He's Down The main story on CNN's home page just now is John Edwards' affair admission. Yawn. The part that calls out to me is that the picture of him on the front page is this one. You can hear the editors' checklist: Public figure? Check. Extramarital affair? Check. Previous denials? Check. Lackey, go Google us a picture of this bozo holding up The Finger of Sincerity. We're splashing that sucker on the front page! Woohoo! | | Thursday, August 7th, 2008 | | 2:28 pm |
Coincidence? Hmm, No The dangerous International Mastermind of Evil, aka Osama bin Laden's driver, has been sentenced to 66 months in prison. Because he's been at Guantanamo for 5 years, he's credited with that time served. Let's all do the math, shall we? 5 years = 60 months. 66 - 60 = 6 months. 8/7/2008 + 6 months = ~2/7/2009. Why look, it's early February, 2009. Why does that time period seem somehow important? Oh, right! It's just a couple of weeks after we sing "Bye, Bye, Bush"! Anyone who thinks this is an accident is excused. Current Mood: cynical | | Wednesday, August 6th, 2008 | | 4:00 pm |
